Raw milk can not be sold for human consumption in Indiana, but a summer study committee is looking into whether that law should be changed.
The State Board of Animal Health launched a website today where the public can share their opinions on whether raw milk should be sold in Indiana.
State law bans the sale of raw milk for human consumption, but a summer study committee is looking into whether that law should be changed. Based on research and public comment, the group a will provide a recommendation for how the state should address the topic in next year’s legislative session.
Board of Animal Health Spokesperson Denise Derrer says if the state legalizes the sale of raw milk, it will need to have a plan as to how the product could be sold. She says that’s where public comment could help generate ideas.
“There are 27 states that allow the sale of raw milk in some form, and if you look at those laws, at how they’re written in different states, you’ll find that there are 27 different versions,” she says. “There is no good role model or standard out there necessarily, we’re taking a hard look at all of those to see if there is something already in the pipeline, but we also want to think outside the box.”
Derrer says the comments won’t be made public, but the Board of Animal Health will take the comments into consideration. The website will remain open until September 1.
