Searching for the electric tricycle of the future (Philippines)

Department Of Energy  launches e-trike design contest

MANILA, Philippines – Forget about the noisy and smoke-spewing tricycles that fill the streets of Metro Manila. The government is hoping “green” electric tricycles (e-trike) will be the norm throughout the country in the future.

The Department of Energy (DOE) is asking Filipinos to submit their designs for the future Philippine e-trike, as part of its “Bright Now! Do Right. Be Bright. Go E-trike!” contest.

“We want a design that can be used here in the city, and at the same time it can also be used by people in the provinces,” Energy Secretary Jose Rene D. Almendras said in a statement.

He noted the electric tricycles can be promoted as a “rural electric vehicle”, especially in provinces where tricycles are the primary mode of transportation.

The DOE’s “Design an e-trike” contest is open to all Filipino citizens of legal age (18 years old and above), whether individual or group residing in the Philippines.  Contestants should submit 2D and 3D computer-aided drawings of the best aesthetic and functional design for the e-trike.

The e-trike should be a three-wheeled electric vehicle and can accommodate a maximum of 6 passengers, excluding the driver.

Examples of three-wheeled electric vehicles and other detailed information on the contest can be viewed at the DOE website, www.doe.gov.ph.

The electric tricycle program is a partnership between the DOE and the Asian Development Bank as part of their National Electric Vehicle Strategy. This involves the introduction of e-tricycles, e-jeepneys, e-buses, and e-cars with the help of local entrepreneurs and technical experts.
